[ First Impressions ]
The second-generation BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, internally known as the F74, marks the latest evolution of BMW's smallest four-door coupé. Sharing its platform with the latest 1 Series hatchback, the difference between the two is fairly straightforward—the 1 Series is for those who still appreciate a hatch, while the 2 Series Gran Coupé leans towards buyers who want something a little sleeker without stepping into 3 Series territory.
The model we're looking at here is the BMW 216i Gran Coupé M Sport. Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 122bhp. On paper, those numbers won't have anyone cancelling their appointment for an M2, but that's rather the point. If you're after something considerably quicker, BMW already has the M235 xDrive waiting with its 2.0-litre four-cylinder pushing over 300bhp.
For everyone else, this is a sensible BMW that still knows how to dress well.

Or is it covering something up?
[ The First Drive ]
Just within the first 30 minutes with this car, it becomes clear that the BMW 216i Gran Coupé isn't a car built to impress at traffic-light drag races—and in Singapore, that's probably for the best because the next red light is rarely more than a few hundred metres away anyway.

Instead, the 216i feels composed, well-balanced and genuinely enjoyable in everyday driving. The steering is precise without feeling overly heavy, the suspension strikes a sweet balance between comfort and control, and the compact dimensions make it incredibly easy to thread through multi-storey car parks and tight urban streets. The three-cylinder engine won't pin you to your seat, but it delivers its power smoothly enough that merging onto expressways or overtaking slower traffic never feels like a stressful event.
[ Real Comparisons, Real Conversation ]
It's hard to explain to you if you have never owned a BMW or step foot into this car - this car simply feels like a BMW. There's a reassuring solidity to the way it drives that gives you confidence, whether you're navigating the morning commute or taking the long way home after dinner. It's the kind of car that quietly gets the fundamentals right without constantly reminding you about it.
Who is this car for? I'd say it's almost tailor-made for a small family, a young professional, or a DINK (Dual Income, No Kids) couple with a golden retriever happily occupying the boot on weekend café runs. It's practical enough for everyday life, premium enough to feel special, and compact enough to suit Singapore's roads perfectly.
This isn't a car for everyone. Enthusiasts chasing outright performance will naturally gravitate towards the M235, while those obsessed with every tiny feature or missing badge may find reasons to nitpick. But it can absolutely be a car for almost anybody who's willing to look beyond the specification sheet. If you're not overly concerned about the little details that don't fundamentally change the driving experience, you'll discover a well-rounded, refined and genuinely pleasant daily companion. Sometimes, a good car isn't the one that tries to be everything—it just needs to be exactly what most people actually need.
[ Buy, or not ]
One area where BMW deserves genuine credit is after-sales support.
Having worked within the automotive trade, I've seen firsthand how BMW honors its warranty packages. Cars that return to the workshop under warranty are often comprehensively repaired, including wear-and-tear items where applicable, and owners frequently receive their vehicles back feeling remarkably close to new again.
That's not something every manufacturer consistently delivers, and it's worth factoring into the ownership equation.

And with CarTimes, we provide one of, if not the best financing options for car purchases - preowned or brand new. We totally understand that some people prefer keeping cash and want a low affordable payment, we can do that too!

So what's the verdict?
The BMW 216i Gran Coupé isn't trying to be the fastest BMW on sale.  Will the 122bhp leave you grinning on every expressway on-ramp? Probably not.

Will it make your daily commute feel a little more enjoyable, whether you're heading to work or you looking forward to deep clean your car and admire the details? Absolutely.
And perhaps that's exactly what this car was designed to do.
